Mel Shapiro is from a different generation, one that has straw hat and cane numbers in their bones. Imagine my surprise to turn the page of our script to find that a straw hat and cane have been tossed onto the stage and now I’ve got four people singing and dancing to my music.

Here is the first draft of the accompaniment to the finale of Act 1. Since you’ve had such trouble fetching this in the various hotels you’re staying at, this seemed like a good solution. I think it’s got great momentum. It’s like an international string band! Let me know what you think,

Composer Steven Mackey was UCLA’s visiting composer yesterday. He gave a 2-hour talk about his music and life. He played a fantastic work for 4 electric guitars, 5 singers and large orchestra called “Dreamhouse.” He stopped between movements and answered questions from students and faculty with great style.
