Interview with Arnold Schoenberg

January 28, 2009

Thanks to Gary Philo for finding this most interesting interview. (Halsey Stevens is the interviewer.)

One of the interesting confessions here is that Schoenberg refers to himself as an “amateur painter” with no technique; and that he is, as of this interview, no longer a painter.

There is some wonderful material on Arnold and his dynamic duo of students in Alex Ross’s book The Rest is Noise.

I’m also reminded of the anecdote I first heard related by Jim Svejda, about Schoenberg being told the comments of a graphologist who had viewed his handwriting, who said “This man thinks he is at least the Emperor of China”. Allegedly Schoenberg’s response was “So? Did he believe I was justified?”

“I hear that the Emperor of China, Wears iron shoes with ease…” (from Waltz of the New Moon, The Incredible String Band).
