Silver hair

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

I went down to a local cafe this morning. On the way, this was 6:30 am, I saw many people in their 50s and 60s out walking or jogging. Everyone in the coffee shop looked like college students with silver hair. A very youthful aging population here in Mill Valley.

LA 2 SF

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Today I drove to San Francisco (alone) with banjo, clothes, and an audio book of Harry Potter 6. Tomorrow rehearsal of my string quartet will be at 1:30. I took the highway 101 from LA to SF across the Golden State Bridge to Mill Valley where I’m staying in a beautiful little forested home, surrounded [...]

Within you and without you

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

I once asked my father why he didn’t send Christmas cards to his congregation. “If you forget someone, they get hurt and say ‘well you sent a card to So-and-so, but you didn’t send one to me,’ so my Christmas cards are my sermons, they are for everyone.” That made sense. He wasn’t just being [...]

This is the first in a long series of lessons in composition. My ideal student is Rufus Wainwright however it could be anyone with musical talent in composition who wishes to virtually study at the college level.

First lesson: check out of the libary or purchase the Liber Usualis. In it you will find a gold [...]

Bourland in ecstacy

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Here I am, practicing for my debut as a banjist, er, a banjoist, or a banjo player in the Bay area next week. It’s a secret that the concert will have a piece called “Emily” as an encore. The main attraction of the concert given by the Ives Quartet will feature first string quartets by [...]

Barkin’s Hubcaps: NYLA

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

Here is Elaine Barkin’s latest piece of hubcap art, NYLA, which I assume means New York/Los Angeles, her two main homes. I see the Empire State building and a palm tree. A fab, single high heel, two ties, a yellow car, a couple of ties, and gosh, a lot more.
Her husband George has been in [...]

Seeing musical form: “Go or Go Ahead”

Monday, May 1st, 2006

This is a wave form representation of Rufus Wainwright’s “Go or Go Ahead.” Without even hearing the music, one can see a three part song: the first, a long, quiet section that appears to be in three sections, with the third being the loudest, leading into the next section; the second part a violently contrasting [...]
