This is one of my favorite Beatles songs. For my money, this is a Lennon song. I never knew what it was about. This “music video” is actually a scene from their second movie, HELP, and it doesn’t really give us any clues either. I have no idea who the stiff woman is sitting there, looking uncomfortable. I suppose we might suspect that she is hiding her love away. Lame.

After watching the Beatles ANTHOLOGY, I got the distinct impression that this song is about Brian Epstein. In the lyrics, John is acknowledging that Brian had to hide his love away. I can’t help but thinking he had a crush on one or all of them. John implied that Brian didn’t really mean to kill himself. But hiding your love away is a very, very difficult thing to do and sometimes, especially when it was more difficult to come out, you just can’t take it anymore. If this is true, it adds a new dimension to the song, because now we know who “you” is.
