Of course I love the song. I always have. But seeing Karen Carpenter singing it (I never saw this on television back in 1970–could it have been on Sesame Street in its very early years?) brings back the terrible public pain associated with her death from anorexia.
“Seeing” this song creates such a bittersweet mixture: a beautiful song of simple longing, sung by a woman with a life full of secret pain.
