David Lynch: Catching the Big Fish
I just bought and listened to the audio book of David Lynch reading his new “Catching the Big Fish.” It’s a marvelous peak inside his persona and creative process. I would have thought that he was a William Burroughs type character, or Jack Nicholson, or Dennis Hopper. You know, probably smokes a lot of dope, or used to. I mean, this is the maker of Blue Velvet and Eraserhead afterall. But I was surprised to discover that Lynch is an ardent practitioner of Transcendental Meditation, and cites Maharishi Mahesh Yogi specifically as a guru, or perhaps mentor.
His reading style is somewhere between Stephen King and William Burroughs, so it is ironic when he launches into heavily spirit-laced inspirational prose. His advice to filmmakers can easily be translated into whatever your passion is. I found the audio book an attractive “read.”

My friend Crosby, who collects cars among other things, is a friend of DL. He pitched me on the idea of buying a Bitter, a relatively obscure German car which for a while was no longer being made (Cros finds this appealing—I tend to run like hell).
He managed to talk David into getting one, apparently. He said that we could form The Bitter Society, and repair to Crosby’s Hollywood Hills manse where we would whiff cognac, smoke cigars, and talk about All and Everything.
I demurred, but the idea of hanging with Lynch almost sounded worth it.

Stumbled on your blog from a Google search. Readers may not be aware that many critics consider the Transcendental Meditation Organization a cult led by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Readers may be interested in a critical view of TM at TM-Free Blog.

Lynch’s book might as well be “The Gospel According to Lynch” in his fervor for uplifting his readers. He is passionate about TM but nothing he says seemed dangerous, so if TM is a cult, his only crime is to encourage us to know ourselves and go within. Besides that, I have no plans on joining Maharishi’s cult. Been there, done that. The 60s are long gone.
