Key to the success of this re-colorisation is the lack of diegetic sound. It privileges the music as the source of important emotional cues that would normally be provided by both the environmental sounds and tone of voices. If we could here the cheerful banter, between the people we are seeing, the music would more likely be felt as incongruous.
A hard lesson I have learned from scoring cheap/bad horror films, the human reliance on facial, body language and vocal cues trumps scary music, unless one is going for some kind of humor.
